Looking for a composer for a dark sci-fi space station simulation game
More details about the opportunity
How do you describe your game?
It is a sci-fi simulation and management game set on a space station within a fully simulated, dynamic living region of space. The inhabitants of the space station (humans, multiple alien species and robots) are simulated agents that behave according to their individual characteristics, needs and mood.Due to this the game works as a kind of story-generator, where every new run leads to new, unexpected situations and dynamics. They player can decide to grow and specialize their space community however they see fit. For example into a busy space port or a famous space pirate stronghold. The game touches on mature topics and is supposed to have a somewhat darker and exotic atmosphere, while still allowing elements of humor to pop up every now and then. The grafic representation will be stylized 2D in a top-down or isometric perspective.
Do you have a link to a video or a demo of your game? If not, any documentation or pictures?
I have collected some visual references how the game is intended to look like in the future and what mood it should evoke. Still need to collect and bundle it. I will send it later.
If you want to have a rough idea for now, look at the games Prison Architect and Rimworld.
What are your three most inspiring games? Why?
Dwarf Fortress, Evil Genius (2004), Dungeon Keeper 2 (1999)
Because these games allow you to shape and organize a virtual community to your liking, change it and see the simulated consequences of your decisions: "playing god" to a degree.I also like them for their dark humor, exotic/foreign settings and ambience.
What do you love about your game?
That is has a deep, "living" simulation where all the agents behave in a believable way and that the game can be played in a more straightforward action-oriented way or in a more relaxed way as a "virtual model railway" that shows emergent behaviour and is interesting to watch with minimal player input.
When will you release the first demo of the game?
3rd or 4th quarter of 2027
About the music needs
How do you create the music in your game today?
I currently don't create any music on my own.
What do you expect from a collaboration with a musician?
Since my project is still in early development, I am looking for a longer-term collaboration with a smaller scale for now. Since there is no time pressure yet, I would like to take the time to explore a bit to find the right musical style. Also I think the musical style is not set in stone, but rather something that could evolve over time.
Can you share your three favorite scores/songs composed for video games? Why
Deus Ex - The Synapse
This is the theme song of the Hong Kong level. It fits the dark and dystopic setting of Deus Ex while still being uplifting and motivating. I like how it manages to merge a modern sound with traditional elements.
Evil Genius - Main Theme
Plays in the main menu and does an awesome job of bringing you into the setting (70s espionage / "James Bond"-style supervillain lair). I also like how it builds a certain anticipation and has some "drive" / energy to it.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Nerevar Rising (Main Theme)
Also plays in the main menu and sets the stage for a fantasy world the player is about to emerge into. I like how it gives your fantasy something to work with even before you started the actual game.
